Winter sport comes down to the wire
With a commanding 52-34 victory over PEGS, the Girls’ Netball team is now poised to take out their third consecutive Premiership and the Cup will be presented to them after this Saturday’s Final match against Mentone. This is a fantastic result.
So close, but so far was the story of boys’ sport on the weekend. The Boys’ Soccer team played valiantly to the end to record a 2 all draw but as PEGS finished on top of the ladder, they rightly claimed the AGSV Premiership. With only one loss for the year, the boys should be extremely proud of another terrific season. Congratulations to David Plumb (Teacher In Charge), Joe Palatsides (Coach) and Evan Markogiannakis (Assistant Coach) for managing and coaching the boys so well throughout the year.
The wet conditions didn’t help the Footballers and the constant pressure of a determined PEGS team wore them down. Coupled with some missed opportunities in front of goal, the boys were well in the game up until the last 3 minutes when they were only down by 5 points. But when PEGS kicked a goal (against the run of play), and followed up with 2 more in the dying moments, their lead stretched to an unattainable 23 point lead. Whilst Roger Gill (Coach) and Ben Ingleton and Craig Caracella (Assistants) would be generally pleased with the season, they (along with the boys) were bitterly disappointed not to have made the Grand Final.
The Boys’ Hockey team drew their consolation Final with Camberwell and for the first time in 10 years, finished in the top 3. This was a terrific season and congratulations go to Ed Smithers (Teacher In Charge) and Matthew Meadon (Coach) for engendering a great sense of enthusiasm and commitment across the team.
In the girls’ consolation rounds, both our Basketballers and Soccer players had good wins.
