The Early Learning Centre Celebrates National Reconciliation Week

Over the last fortnight, students from the Early Learning Centre have been celebrating National Reconciliation Week by participating in many different activities. Each day students have gathered in a circle holding hands and singing together a simplified Acknowledgement of Country and they have discussed ways in which we can care for the land and each other during the day.  As a group, they worked on a collective flag artwork and after many discussions and research, each of the children can now identify the three Australian flags and speak about the meaning behind the colours and images.

Students were able to then walk up to The Ridgeway Campus and see the three Australian flags at the front of the School on The Ridgeway. It was so lovely for the children to be able to see the flags flying proudly at the front of the School and it gave them a real example of acknowledgement which they could understand.

As part of National Reconciliation Week, the School launched its Reconciliation Action Plan which is comprised of 18 actions. Ivanhoe Grammar School’s vision is for an inclusive inter-cultural relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous Australians based on common respect and recognition of the enduring value of First Peoples’ knowledge and cultures.

‘A key part of Ivanhoe Grammar School’s Reconciliation Action Plan is to recognise National Reconciliation Week. As a school, we believe it is important to work towards reconciliation, to reflect on our journey so far, to acknowledge the first peoples of our nation, and to continue to learn and grow together while acknowledging and welcoming Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders,’ said Principal Gerard Foley.
