Swimming Carnival
On Friday 17 February students and staff made their way to Northcote Aquatic Centre to compete in the first of two major sports carnivals for the year. The Swimming Carnival is always well contested and with the temperature set in the mid-twenties students and staff were excited and ready to compete.
The day started well with the house relay and Year 7 freestyle events, with Thoresby in the lead. The novelty pool was initiated seven years ago as a way to encourage the students who are uncomfortable in the deep pool to get involved. This year the novelty pool was a huge success and there were students lining up to represent their house in water Tchoukball (a modified game of waterpolo).
Meanwhile in the 50m pool the teams were battling it out in freestyle, breastroke, backstroke and the individual medleys. The serious events took a short break in the middle of the day while students had the opportunity to push teachers down the pool on an inflatable thong in the teacher relay (a highlight for so many).
The day concluded with the 4x50m medley and freestyle relays. With each race worth double points it was in these events that Sherwood and Lincoln steamed ahead. With one event to go there was only seven points splitting the top two teams. While the final points were being entered, the prefects and staff battled it out for bragging rights in the staff v student relay. At the end of the day the results were:
Sherwood – 1st place – 664
Lincoln – 2nd place – 653
Thoresby – 3rd place – 486
Athlestane – 4th place – 417
A big thank you to all the staff and students, particularly the middle and senior years house staff and captains, for making this event such a wonderful day for all. Congratulations to Sherwood on the win!
