Ivanhoe’s Inaugural Girls’ Cricket Team
The launch of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) was held on Saturday 1 December. Ivanhoe’s inaugural Girls’ Cricket Team, along with three other AGSV schools, were invited to play their 4th round match of the 2018/19 season as a curtain raiser to Round 1 of the WBBL.
Cricket Victoria opened the gates of Junction Oval early for the girls to play on this remarkable ground. Ivanhoe played their match against Yarra Valley Grammar and demonstrated some very good skill with both bat and ball. The girls have improved considerably since the start of the season, with some brilliant coaching, from Melbourne Stars Captain Kristen Beams, alumni coach Sophie Day, and teacher in charge Jess Roberts.
The game was incredibly close right until the last over. Ivanhoe was bowling and Yarra Valley needed 9 runs off the last over to win. With some superior bowling by Alice Mayne and some sharp wicket keeping by Lexi Wooller, Ivanhoe managed to keep them to just 4 runs off the over and so came away with the win.
The team were then invited to a breakfast function, with some of the WBBL players and were invited to stay and watch the first two matches of the season. It was a fantastic opportunity for all the young female cricketers and the hospitality of Cricket Victoria was amazing. It was an experience the girls will always cherish and remember.
