Ivanhoe Girls Football Claim Herald Sun Shield Title
The Ivanhoe Intermediate Girls Team won the Division 2 final of the Herald Shield with an outstanding team performance on Wednesday 15 August. The match against Luther College was played at Mars Stadium in Ballarat, the ground used in the recent Western Bulldogs/ Port Adelaide game. It was a tight first half with both teams adapting to the size of the ground.
Maddy Gallagher, Ashleigh Snow and Gemma McCarthy led the way with Elly Asdagi strong up forward. Late in the second quarter, Georgia Pirdis goaled so Ivanhoe took a 6 point lead into halftime. After strong words from Coach Bernardi at half time, the girls came out full of determination and in the third quarter lifted, playing all over their opponents. Led by ruckman Immogen Hammond who dominated the centre bounces they slammed on five goals.
Mia Papachristos was everywhere, Alice Mayne was strong off half-back, youngsters Simone Mooney and Georgia Sands won plenty of the ball whilst Mia Giddy shut down their best player. All the girls contributed as Ivanhoe “owned” the football. Luther fought back hard at the start of the last quarter but the backline led by Kate Moorhen held tight and then Ivanhoe once again took over in the last 5 mins to score another three goals including one to Year 7 girl Isabella Italiano. The final score a resounding win to Ivanhoe 8.2 50 to 0.1. 1.
Congratulations to the girls on a fabulous team effort and a truly excellent performance. The best on ground medal went to our very own Imogen Hammond. Full credit must also go to coach Christina Bernardi, our own AFLW star, who has coached the girls with a real passion. The willingness of the girls to listen and learn from her teachings was certainly in clear evidence in this fine performance yesterday. It was a great day for Ivanhoe football!
