The 2015 Greenway Cup

The Greenway Cup debate between Ivanhoe Grammar School and Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School has been held since 1932 and has become an important tradition for both schools. The cup was presented by Mr Herbert T Greenway, whose daughter Eunice attended Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School, for competition between the two schools.

On Friday 28 August, The Greenway Cup Debate was held between the two schools and was hosted by Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School. The teams were debating the topic ‘Freedom of speech must be limited’, with the Ivanhoe Grammar School team (made up of Year 12 debaters Milla, Ruben and Elizabeth) arguing the negative side and the Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School team (made up of Divya, Andriana and Stella) arguing the affirmative.

After losing the debate to the Girls’ school in 2014 our team was keen to regain the cup. All speakers were incredibly well prepared and the adjudicators were in awe of the quality of the debate and the spectacle. In the end and with a unanimous vote, the Ivanhoe Grammar School team was declared victorious, much to the delight of their classmates who had travelled to the Girls’ school to support our debaters.

Congratulations to Milla, Ruben and Elizabeth for an outstanding performance, with particular emphasis on Milla who was awarded Best Speaker by two out of the three adjudicators. The Greenway Cup returns to Ivanhoe Grammar School, and we look forward to defending the title at next year’s debate.
