100th AGSV Athletics Championships
On Saturday 3 September the nine member schools of the AGSV were finally able to acknowledge the 100th anniversary of the 1920 AGSV Athletics Championships hosted at the MCG. The 2022 Carnival was hosted at Lakeside Stadium and despite the poor forecast the weather was perfect for strong athletic performances and that is exactly what the Ivanhoe Grammar School Athletics Team did.
Both the Boys’ team and the Girls’ team led their respective competitions for most of the day. This was due in no small part to a number of outstanding individual performances, with a large number of individual and relay victories being recorded, plus many more personal best performances. In the end, our teams couldn’t quite maintain their competition leads (the Boys’ Team were only overwhelmed in the final event), with both the Boys’ Team and Girls’ Team finishing second overall. Well done to all the students involved, particularly those who finished mid-field in their events because without their courage and selflessness the day would not nearly be as successful.
The centenary event also included an athlete parade, food trucks and race commentary, culminating in the trophy presentation at 5.15pm.
All in all, it was a superb day of competition, with the students and staff of Ivanhoe Grammar School showing each other an enormous amount of support throughout the day. A huge thanks to the academic staff involved: Daniel Verrocchi, Christina Parodi, Michelle van Beek, Stuart Adderley, Lawrence Dalton and David Hrovat. To put a side together, which draws from three campuses, can only be a team effort.
