Sports Report
After a few weekends of great success, most teams lowered their colours on the weekend with only our soccer boys and girl footballers enjoying good wins.
BOYS
The soccer boys travelled to Peninsula knowing that every game is now like a semi-final, and they played accordingly with a good solid win. With just two games to go, wins against Trinity and Camberwell will ensure our great finals run of seven continuous years continues for another year.
In football, the boys played exceptionally well and went down by just six points to undefeated Trinity. All the boys were committed to the contest all day and worked extremely hard. Hugh Marslen, Xavier Naish and Nick Vacirca led a tight backline that repeatedly repelled many Trinity forward opportunities. Kane Vacirca , Bailey Leonard and Jesse King controlled the midfield and Matt Johnson and Rupert Azzopardi provided excellent targets up forward. We fell short by an extremely narrow margin; however the boys can be proud of their efforts.
Our hockey boys played with great determination and grit but eventually succumbed to a very strong Trinity team. Will Rutley was impressive both in defense and in attack.
GIRLS
In a very tight contest, our netball girls could not overcome the lead that Caulfield had established in the early quarters, eventually going down by just five goals. This leaves the girls precariously placed with respect to a top-two finish but with four games to go, anything is still possible.
Our basketball girls were unable to maintain their winning streak and were outplayed by a very tall Caulfield team.
Our soccer girls were clearly outclassed by a PEGS team at full strength. We defended well in the first half, but the energy and focus this required was too much to last the full 80 minutes. There was some great attacking play by the girls, but we just couldn’t hit the back of the net. A valiant effort, but unfortunately just not good enough on the day.
It was a tough day at the office for the Ivanhoe girls hockey team. Despite a terrific first twenty minutes where we held Haileybury scoreless, we just couldn’t contain their consistent attacks and eventually paid the price for some undisciplined defense.
Our senior football girls continued their run of success with another good win, this time against Carey. Georgia Pirdis and Kate Moorhen, who both stepped up from the junior team, performed strongly. Tilly Nicoll, Emily Beanland (who received the Indigenous Medal for best team player) and Antonia O’Brien led the way with tackle pressure, whilst Laura Mayne and Taylor Langford were both important leaders for the whole game.
