Hockey Girls Just Miss!

In a tight contest which went down to the last minute or two, our hockey girls just couldn’t get that last goal and in the end PEGS scored in the last few minutes to take the victory. It was a terrific effort by the girls considering the strength of the opposition that they have had to face in the earlier rounds.

The netball girls continued their good form with a solid win against Mentone. With Suli Leota being the ‘general’ in defence, and the Shannon girls controlling the mid-court, we were able to continually get the ball to Aysha Blade and Demi Carr to finish the good teamwork. This win now places the girls in equal 2nd position with three important games to come against Caulfield and ACK before the holiday break.

In basketball, the girls were aggressive defensively, which allowed the team to transition into offence and create a lot of scoring opportunities. It was nice to have some height with Alana Miersch back in the team, and she never missed a beat, creating a lot of our moves from defensive rebounds and blocks and then shooting well around the rim. Every other player fed off this and played a very unselfish team game.

Despite a very early and cold start to the morning, our soccer girls were switched on from the start. GGS were very strong in the midfield and attack, so much of the first 20 minutes was played in our defensive half. Louisa Shah made a couple of good saves early on, and Kayla Cvetkovski was excellent in organising the defenders. Our midfielders finally started to break through, but it was clear that we were lacking our usual attacking force up front. With scores at 0-1 at halftime, the girls worked with stand-in coach Stephen Chetcuti to restructure and went out stronger in the second half. It was against the flow of play that GGS scored their second goal, but to the girls’ credit, they kept pressing and finally an opportunity paid off with Emma Sands scoring off a cross from Helena Chetcuti. Overall, this was a terrific team effort.

Our senior football girls had a good win against PEGS. Despite dominating the first quarter, we were only able to kick one goal, finishing with 1 goal 7 behinds for the quarter! However, we had a really strong 3rd quarter with 4 goals. This was a strong team performance with Georgina David Hanna, Chira Scuderi, Taylor Langford and Laura Mayne providing some good individual performances.

Our boys’ football team made it three in a row as they easily accounted for Camberwell. Despite the absence of Tom McKenzie to the Victorian Under 18 selection trial and Xavier Naish to illness, the whole team stood up to demonstrate that they were still a force in 2018. After a relatively tight first quarter, our team started to pull away in the second and opened up a commanding lead by halftime. In the second half, our boys continued to push hard and really started to hit the scoreboard! All the boys put in a fantastic effort with a few special mentions to Rupert Azzopardi who attacked the ball very well taking many marks in our forward half, Ben Nikolovski who had the ball on a string in the second half kicking 4 goals from the wing, Charlie Simonsen who dominated at CHB, and our Captain Kane Veliou who controlled the midfield all day. Our tacking pressure was outstanding and our ball movement very clean. We look forward to a big game against the undefeated Trinity Grammar this weekend.

In soccer, Marcellin simply proved to be too good as they continually put forward pressure on our boys and despite some good saves from Johnathon Ren in his first game, we eventually went down by 3 goals. Connor Campanella continued his good form with another impressive performance.
