Sports Report

Our boys’ cricket and tennis teams kicked off their seasons with commanding wins on the weekend.

The tennis boys started brilliantly, winning all their doubles matches. However our singles results were not quite as good, and we had to be content with an 11-5 rubbers victory.

In cricket, newly appointed captain Jessie King led the way with a fine 87. He was well supported by Oscar Giardinazzo (60) with the bat, and Christian Ewings (2 wickets) with the ball. Our new coach, Mr Luke Lochran, said after the game: “ The boys batted with terrific intent and defended well in the field. A very pleasing effort all ’round.”

Our basketballers, up against last year’s premiers, fought gallantly to just go down by 6 points. A few missed lay-ups and some costly turnovers proved to be the difference but the effort was certainly encouraging. New captain Mackenzie Graham showed good form in his first game leading the team.

Our badminton and table tennis boys made it two wins in succession when they defeated Yarra Valley on the weekend. Both teams sit top of the ladder. Darren Qiang (badminton) and Oscar Li (table-tennis) both played extremely well in their respective matches.

And in volleyball, despite winning the first set 25-17, the boys weren’t able to close out the next three sets, going down in close-fought sets 23-25, 20-25 and 23-25! According to our coach Mr John McInerney, “ This was a frustrating and disappointing loss, especially having a winning lead in the second set. Despite the loss, augers well for the future as the opposition were a very good team.”

The competition goes into recess for this weekend, and all matches, including Girls’ Firsts matches, will resume again on November 11.
