Term 1 Sports Roundup
It has been an incredible start to the year with some unprecedented streaks and record-breaking performances. Here are some highlights from Term 1.
GIRLS’ CRICKET A BIG HIT!
Over the last two Saturdays, 70 girls from 6 different schools have taken part in the first ever Twenty20 Blast AGSV/APS organised cricket competition.
In magnificent conditions at Chelsworth Park on Saturday 18th March, and then again at Yarra Valley on Saturday 25th Marxh, the Ivanhoe Team won all their games (four in total) and rightly claimed the unofficial “Champions” title!
On week one, we were fortunate to have State Representative Emma Sands playing a crucial role, getting valuable wickets as well as hitting some great boundaries.
At Yarra Valley, the girls were most fortunate to have current Australian leg-spinner Kristen Beams as their coach and the girls responded with some impressive performances, especially from Lexi Wooller.
It is fair to say that cricket made a “big hit” with the girls!
NARROW MISS FOR AGSV SWIMMERS
The atmosphere was electric at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatics Centre on Friday night.
The Ivanhoe Grammar School AGSV Rep team ‘The Vikings’ swam their hearts out, the lead changing many times throughout the night and coming down to the final race for both our boys’ and girls’ teams. In the end, they went down valiantly to our old swimming rival Mentone Grammar School to claim second place for both. The Vikings came heartbreakingly close to a premiership this year and in the case of the girls team, it came down to the last moment of the last race.
Well done Vikings on an inspiring season and a courageous final meet and particular thanks to our TICs Dean Voss and Graham White and our Head Coach, Jo Love.
GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL UNLUCKY THIS TIME
Needing a victory to win the Premiership, the girls unfortunately couldn’t get over the line and went down in 3 sets to Haileybury. They had unprecedented success this season, to get so close with such a young team was an excellent effort and augers well for the future. Better luck next year girls!
TENNIS GIRLS’ TEAM FINISH THE SEASON ON A HIGH
In a very tight battle, the girls’ tennis team finished their season on a high with a terrific win against perennial finalists Wesley College.
Congratulations to our captain Claire Candidio who held the team together throughout the season.
BOYS’ TENNIS SO CLOSE…
In another tight Grand Final (their fourth in a row), the boys unfortunately went down 9 rubbers to 7 to PEGS. Although leading after the round of doubles and the first few singles, the PEGS boys proved too strong in the deciding matches. Congratulations to all the boys who played throughout the season.
