Ivanhoe’s Kayakers take out the Australian Championships
Once again a large contingent of paddlers competed at the National Schools’ Kayaking Championships. In January, 24 Ivanhoe paddlers including six first time juniors headed to the Barrington High Plains NSW to regain their Australian Champion title. All the paddlers are to be commended on their year round commitment with many training up to six times a week. The rewards were deserved and for the 15th year running the team regained the Best Overall Team title.
At an individual level, Tristan Carter won Best Senior Paddler and Brad McLoughlan Best Junior Paddler, highlighting their rising status in the sport at a national level. Many of the senior paddlers are now concentrating on preparation for selection to the Australian Junior Team who will travel to Europe and Canada in June. We wish them well in their endeavours and I will communicate the success of our Australian team members soon.
Our 2017 kayak program starts in a couple of weeks. We look forward to sharing this wonderful sport with our new Year Seven students and their families.
Many thanks go to the dedicated efforts of David Gibbs and Peter Hogg for working tirelessly all year developing the paddling skills of this talented kayaking team.
