Rio Gold Medallist Mentors Stars of the Future
Last Thursday 29 September the School Pool was filled with very excited young swimmers awaiting the arrival of Gold Medal Olympic Swimmer, Kyle Chalmers. Kyle, who was in Melbourne for the Grand Final and is a good friend of Ivanhoe Neon’s new coach, Ash Delaney flew in from Adelaide and trained with the senior squad of Ivanhoe Neon’s swim Team.
Before the training session started, Kyle displayed his medals and was very gracious in signing autographs and having photos taken with students and their parents.
Kyle Chalmers won the Gold Medal Men’s 100m Freestyle at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Chalmers was just 18 years-old when he took out the 100 metre freestyle crown and is an inspiration to young swimmers.
The Ivanhoe Neon’s home base is the Ivanhoe Grammar School pool with many of the swimmers coming from Ivanhoe. The Head Coach of the Ivanhoe Neon’s club is Olympic Silver Medallist, and Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist, Ashley Delaney. The third Olympian present was the Australian Rio Olympic team member and Commonwealth Games Silver medallist, Josh Beaver. It was wonderful and a once in a lifetime experience to have three Olympians in the same room.
The senior squad of the Ivanhoe Neon’s is made up of twenty very talented young swimmers. Having the chance to train with an Olympic Gold Medallist so close to them in age is an experience that they will surely never forget.
