Microsoft Innovation Educator Expert

On Friday 19 August it was announced that Director of ICT & eLearning at Ivanhoe Grammar School, Steve Brophy had been chosen as a Microsoft Innovation Educator Expert. The Microsoft Innovative Educator (MIE) program recognises global educators who are pushing boundaries of learning with creativity and technology.

There are 4,800 educators representing 100 countries that have been recognised by Microsoft as experts who exemplify excellence for 2016-2017.

Steve has been an educator for 16 years and inspired by technology as a medium since the early 2000s. He continues to be inspired by teaching and his involvement with young people.

“In my daily role, I am inspired by the intersection with technology as a medium to enable new possibilities with learning. Technology’s power is in the enabling of ideas, connections and voice and this is what drives the direction for technology use at Ivanhoe,” said Steve.

Steve has been integral in incorporating elearning into all areas of the School and was also responsible for holding the first TeachTechPlay Conference at Ivanhoe in early 2016.

TeachTechPlay’s mission is to provide quality professional learning, inviting educators from around the world to share lesson ideas, resources and tools they have used successfully in their classroom.

The two day conference focused on digital technologies and how these technologies can be harnessed to enhance teaching and learning.

Steve was truly honoured to be recognised as a MIE Expert. As Director of ICT and eLearning Steve has a broad and extensive role however his favourite part is still working with students.

“Helping young people design and 3D print original products or a group of students collaboratively problem solve a complex robotics problem is the best part of my role. One of my heroes, Steve Wheeler (a professor from the UK) defines pedagogy (the art of teaching) as “leading students to a place where they can learn for themselves” and technology has tremendous capacity to facilitate that,” he said.
