Girls’ Teams dominate at the start of the Winter season

With a number of new faces in Ivanhoe’s Firsts’ Soccer team, it would be expected that the team would take some time to warm-up, but in reality, it only took one match to defeat PEGS 3-1. With Betti Michael scoring two goals on debut, and a mid-field of Felicity Georgopoulos, Regan Phillips, Noura Tawfic and Shelby Green controlling play, the team was able to set up multiple chances for the entire first half.

Whilst all Girls contributed to the win, it was great to see Mia Traviato stepping up in the goalie role, with Taryn Bitzas and Jacqui Mitchelhill offering great support as they defended everything that came their way. Kayla Cvetkovski also proved to be a good addition to the line-up. The next match will be the real test against Haileybury.

In Basketball, the team was able to carry on from the successful USA Basketball Tour by beating PEGS convincingly 54 to 38. Sarah Foley and Romy Costa were a big inside presence, taking away anything that came into the key and also finding great looks themselves to put points on the board. Georgia Vahos and Bree Bucca were able to get their eye in early with some great outside shooting, while having the task of shutting down and limiting PEGS stronger players. All in all, everyone played well, fulfilling their roles and coming away with a great team win.

The Netball team, looking for a third consecutive Premiership, had a convincing win over Yarra Valley, 66 -30. Led superbly by Captain Olivia Gigli and Vice-Captain Georgia Harper, the girls displayed excellent concentration and determination to take the win. With minimal preparation leading in to this game, the girls were focused, patient and backed each other, showing some amazing creativity and vision across the court. It was great to see Ella Shannon (1st game), who normally plays Centre, shooting at 91% as the GA, Suli Leota (1st game) shooting at 93%, and Emily Anderson and Isabella Gardiner (1st game) continually providing options across the court.

In defence, Isabella Hines, worked tirelessly to get turnovers in the ring , whilst Lauren Pentony gave great agility and back up to our centre players. Overall, this was an inspiring start to the season with all the team showing a strong sense of unity and School pride.

In boys’ sport, the footballers were outplayed by a hard-working Marcellin team. The result was disappointing given the excellent pre-season with strong form being displayed against two APS schools. Fortunately, it was only round 1 so there will be a lot more chances to turn the table in the ensuing weeks.
