300 Blankets
300 Blankets is a not-for-profit charity that provides goods such as warm blankets and support to the homeless living rough on the streets of Melbourne.
Founded in 2012 by a group of friends with the message, “be the change you want to see in the world” the initiative grew through volunteering with programs such as the St Vincent de Paul Society soup vans.Through a volunteer outreach program and connections with support groups and charities 300 Blankets has been able to have a significant positive influence on people at risk.
Alumni such as Peter Royce (’06) have been volunteering their time to this charity for some years and current students from Ivanhoe Grammar School have been involved since 2015. Volunteering for this charity has really opened the eyes and the hearts of the students and their families to the plight of people living on the streets.
This year, a number of students, parents and alumni have taken to the streets to volunteer their time. Year 12 student and the School Charities Coordinator, Stefan volunteered on Tuesday 2 February and was very moved by his experience saying, ‘Every single day, they have to deal with the cold and wet, they have to deal with being alone – but doing something so effortless like delivering a blanket and having a chat, you are making their life slightly easier.’
