Eight Years of Success for Ivanhoe Kayakers
The 2016 Wildwater and Slalom School Championships which ran from 8-12 January saw a large contingent of Ivanhoe Grammar School paddlers compete at this event on the Forth River in Tasmania.
,, Ivanhoe Grammar School dominated the School Awards at the national championships, taking out the National Schools Competition for the eighth year in a row and Best Boys’ Team. This is an outstanding achievement and only possible because of a combined effort between students, parents and staff at Ivanhoe Grammar School.
Ten of the 18 male Ivanhoe paddlers were selected to the elite National Talent Squad along with Year 10 student Zoe Lau who was selected to the Girls’ Squad. Year 9 Student and rising star Brad McLaughlin performed exceptionally well taking out the Junior Boys’ Individual trophy. Guided by former Olympian Warwick Draper he is a paddler to watch out for.
The Competition was made up of one day of wildwater racing over 4km of the Forth River and two days of canoe slalom at the Tasmanian Canoe Clubs’ Forth River Slaolm course.
Ivanhoe Grammar School has a proud tradition of kayaking which is supported by the Kayak Parents’ Support Group who put countless hours into supporting the program and making it the success that it is today. A big thanks also to David Gibbs and Peter Hogg for the effort and dedication they continue to provide.
