Teams of the Centenary Dinner

Our last major Centenary event was the Teams of the Centenary Dinner held at Leonda on Wednesday 28 October. 300 guests gathered to celebrate 100 years of great sporting achievements by students at Ivanhoe Grammar School. The event was not only recognition of fine performances in the five original sports but it was a celebration of a century of sport that includes many diverse sports from lawn bowls to softball. The audience of alumni, current and past staff, current and past parents and Centenary sponsors were entertained by our MC, Tony Wilson, journalist and ABC radio broadcaster who pulled the night together with great wit.

Highlights included the announcement of the Team Twenty for Girls’ Swimming and Athletics (1995 – 2015), followed by the Teams of the Centenary for Football, Athletics, Swimming, Tennis and Cricket. Each team member was presented with a medallion and certificate, before having their team photos taken as a lasting memory of the night. We were also delighted that Rod Fraser announced the creation of two new Awards to honour David O’Halloran (Class of 1973) and Ben Cookson (Class of 2001), both of whom passed away recently.

A Q&A with three of our top female sporting alumni – Alice Teague-Neeld, Emily Bamford and Maggie Webster – profiled their achievements in Netball, Skiing and Kayaking. We also inducted Stuart Wenn (Class of 1986) into the Sporting Hall of Fame. Over a twenty season career at AFL level between 1995 and 2014, Stuart umpired 341 senior games including 5 finals.

The evening was a memorable occasion for the Ivanhoe Family.
