Young Scholars Program
The Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program is an academic enrichment program offered at the University of Melbourne that is designed to support high achieving students from Victoria, selected New South Wales and South Australian border schools.
Professor Kwong Lee Dow retired from the University of Melbourne as Vice-Chancellor in 2004 and prior to this was Senior Lecturer in Education at the university. Over the years he has held various Victorian and Commonwealth Government appointments. Kwong was appointed Member of the Order of Australia in 1984, received the Sir James Darling Medal of the Australian College of Education in 1994, in 2005 was awarded the Gold Medal of the Australian Council for Educational Leaders and in 2012 was made an Officer of the Order of Australia.
The Young Scholars program aims to provide students with the opportunity to meet and connect with like-minded students, develop leadership and community involvement skills, get a taste of university life, as well as access to University resources, academics and events at the Parkville campus.
On Thursday 4 December the Young Scholar program welcomed over 700 new students, including four students from Ivanhoe Grammar School. Lelaina Facchinetti, Noura Tawfic, Danny Martin and international student Mark Zhao were selected into the program on the basis of academic performance, leadership skills as well as the School’s endorsement and will join the Kwong Lee Dow Class of 2016.
With over 1900 applications received, it is a highly competitive selection process and those who are selected should be extremely proud.
