Book Week – Connect to reading, Reading to connect

Monday 18 August to Friday 22 August was the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book Week. The theme for this year was ‘Connect to reading, Reading to connect’ which is about enjoying the experience of exploring story, travelling to other worlds and creating a bond with others. Within the world of the contemporary child, connect to reading is also relevant as they read books and they read to connect through a variety of media.

Primary students from both Buckley House and Plenty donned their best costumes to take part in a character dress up parade. Not only did all the students look fantastic as their favourite book characters, the staff also let their hair down and dressed up to celebrate the occasion.

The Library staff at each campus planned special events to celebrate Book Week and encourage students to connect through a mutual appreciation of the written word.

At The Ridgeway Library, students were treated to a variety of daily lunchtime activities such as a Connect 4 competition, Lego and puzzle day, Makerspace demonstration, chess and a Year 7 poster competition. A photo booth for making portrait style book marks was very popular and it raised funds for the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation.

At the Plenty Campus, students welcomed Australian author Kirsty Murray who presented to the students as well as facilitated a writer’s workshop for students in Years 5 to 7.
