Tournament of Minds
On Sunday 17 August, Ivanhoe students competed in the Tournament of Minds at La Trobe University. The team competed in the Maths Engineering Challenge and their hard work and dedication throughout the term paid off, as they won the Northern Region division.
Tournament of Minds (TOM) is a problem solving program for teams of students from both primary and secondary years. Teams solve challenges from a choice of the following disciplines; Applied Technology, Language Literature, Maths Engineering or Social Sciences. TOM provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their problem solving skills and talents in an exciting, vibrant and public way. The tournament also aims to enhance time management, enterprise, working as a team, thinking outside the square, utilising technology, working within a competitive environment and promote knowledge and appreciation of self and others.
The Ivanhoe team consisted of Year 7’s Alex, Andrew and Tom, Zoe and Aishwarya from Year 8 and Sam and Liam from Year 9. The team was required to work together on a Long Term Challenge for six weeks without assistance from teachers, parents or peers. This challenge encouraged the students to explore possibilities and experiment with ideas as they aim to produce their best possible solution and communicate this to others on Tournament Day.
On the day, the team was required to present their solution to the judges and an audience within ten minutes and in the confines of a three metre by three metre performance area. In addition, the team also participated in a Spontaneous Challenge, which required the ability to think on their feet and work cooperatively as a team.
As a result of their excellent teamwork the Ivanhoe students will compete in the State Final at La Trobe University on Sunday 14 September.
