Student volunteers help to transform lives
Every year Ivanhoe students volunteer for the Salvation Army’s annual Red Shield Doorknock Appeal and this year was no exception with 50 students giving up their afternoon on Sunday 25 May to doorknock in the Ivanhoe area collecting donations from local residents.
The students took time out of their weekend to volunteer, raising over $1000. The large contingent was split into smaller groups who went doorknocking in the local area. Everyone was enthusiastic and friendly, both the students involved and those who made a donation.
This money contributed towards the total $4.97 million raised over the weekend across Australia. Salvation Army spokesperson, Major Bruce Harmer said: " We thank Australians for their tremendous generosity towards The Salvation Army and encourage those who would still like to give to please send in their donations…In particular, we were encouraged by the number of young people who chose to volunteer.”
The Salvation Army provides assistance for people experiencing hardship due to homelessness, addiction, domestic violence and unemployment as well as providing court and prison services, aged care, emergency services, disability programs and support for asylum seekers. The Red Shield Appeal is the Army’s major annual fundraiser and the money raised will help them continue their very important work.
Ivanhoe Grammar School places a strong emphasis on service and this is just one example of the many service activities our students participate in, both locally and internationally. Well done to all students who volunteered their time and participated in the Red Shield Appeal this year.
