Ivanhoe students selected in SSV Teams
Netball
On top of some great form last year and impressing in the early games of the AGSV season, Year 9 student, Georgia Harper, has been selected in the 15 and under State Schools' Victorian (SSV) Netball Team.
After making her debut for the Firsts' netball team as a Year 8 student, Georgia has continued to make great strides, particularly in her role as a strong defender. Her determination and her ability to read the play are two aspects of her game that continually stand out.
Interestingly, Georgia has a strong family connection with the school. Her grandfather, John (’41), is a regular attender at School Events and the Buckley Boys’ Annual reunion, and her father, Peter (’79), was a member of the school’s Firsts tennis team.
Soccer
Kehley Bitzas has been selected in the 19 years and under SSV soccer team. This is a marvellous achievement for Kehley considering she is still only in Year 11. Kehley has been a member of the Firsts' school soccer team for the last four years.
According to her coach, Kehley, who is the goal keeper, reads the play well and has been instrumental in the school’s terrific performances over the last few years. The School Sport Australian Championships will be held in Glenwood, NSW from Saturday 23 August to Friday 29 August 2014. The School wishes both Kehley and Georgia all the best in their respective National Championships.
Swimming
Year 8 student, Flynn Schneider and Year 9 student, Kelsie Walker have both been selected in the 2014 Victorian Swimming Team to compete at the School Sport Australia Swimming Championships in Melbourne from 20 – 26 July 2014.
Both swimmers excelled at the recent AGSV meeting, helping Ivanhoe Grammar School to second place in both the boys’ and girls’ competition. Kelsie won the under 15 Freestyle and Backstroke events and was a member of the winning relay team. She also finished second in the under 15 butterfly and was a member of the under 15 medley relay. Flynn, who swam out of his age group in some events, was a member of Ivanhoe’s under 16 winning medley team and won a Full Blue for this effort. His time in the under 17 Breaststroke (where he finished fourth) would have won the under 14 event!
A big congratulations to both swimmers on their selection and the School wishes them all the best at the School Sport Australia Championships.
WEEKEND OF SPORT WRAP UP
Despite a couple of losses in boys’ football and girls’ basketball, Ivanhoe's overall performances in the AGSV (boys)and AGSV/APS first competitions were once again very solid. Special congratulations to the boys’ hockey team who recorded their first win of the season!
Girls’ Netball
The girls continued their good form and played well for the entire four quarters. Our patience across the court ensured the deliveries hit their targets more regularly, and this, coupled with some very creative passing, saw the ball travel very quickly into attack. The goalers were very hard to stop with Alice Teague-Neeld shooting at an amazing 94 per cent and Tiffany Carr also right up there with 80 per cent.
Solid defence and an innovative centre court may have may have made it look easier than it was, but in reality, the girls worked very hard for every minute of the game. This was a sensational effort.

Girls’ Soccer
The odds were against Ivanhoe from the outset at Keilor Park for our round 2 game against Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School. With the goal keeper, Kehley, carrying a hand injury, it was Jacquie Mitchelhill who had the unenviable task of taking her place. Strong winds made it near impossible to control the ball off the ground, and even harder for Jacquie in goals.
Losing the toss, they were kicking into the wind for the first half. Despite this, the Ivanhoe girls dominated the play. A penalty to PEGS 20 minutes in saw them go to a 1-0 lead. Soon afterwards, Sophie Cuthbert was brought down in the box, and Noura Tawfic took the penalty and scored to draw level. In the final 10 minutes of the first half, some fantastic team play saw Shelby Green score twice to give Ivanhoe a 3-1 lead at half time.
Going with the wind in the second half, the girls were determined to finish the game off in style. Unfortunately for the team, the injury toll mounted. Whilst the girls once again dominated, even when down to only 10 players due to injuries, they just couldn't score in the second half. It was trying conditions, and many of the girls bear the bruises of a hard fought game, but a fantastic win against a very competitive PEGS outfit.

Boys’ Soccer
Leading up to one of the biggest games of the Firsts soccer season, nerves were high as the boys prepared to face the AGSV champions, PEGS. The game began with the boys providing some beautiful possession based soccer, stringing together passes all over the field. The breakthrough came early on as Peter Michael played a brilliant diagonal pass to the feet of Oli Daly who played a perfect one-two combination pass with Dion Gavalas to deceive PEGS goalkeeper and score the first goal. Although PEGS threatened the Ivanhoe defence, composure was maintained and the team went into half time with a slender one goal advantage.
As play resumed in the second half, the ball fell to Jordan Basile who delivered a perfect cross to Gavala who finished the move off with a beautifully looped header leaving the scores at 2-0 for the majority of the second half. The team almost found themselves 3-0 up after a magnificent solo run by Tom Podaridis whose shot just skimmed the outside of the goal post. PEGS scored late in the game, causing a nervous end to an otherwise excellent performance by the boys. Whilst this was an outstanding performance from the entire team, particular congratulations go to Tom Podaridis, Oli Daly, Terry Constandelos, Nicholas Karkalas, Dion Gavalas, and Jordan Basile, for some terrific individual efforts.

Boys’ Hockey
After an in-depth reflective and motivational pre-game talk, Ivanhoe took to the field determined to come home with a positive outcome. The defending players, especially Jaime and Darcy, were superb in moving the ball from side to side and feeding to our driving attacks mainly down the right wing.
When Marcellin scored 5 mins from full time, the umpires decide to call the game off because of bad light. Goals for Ivanhoe were scored by Ben S, Ben T, Will, Nathan and Darcy.
This was certainly a match that Ivanhoe can be commended on, and maybe it will be the catalyst to a few more wins as the season unfolds.

Boys’ Football
After two very encouraging wins to kick start the season, the team came back to earth with a thud against a very committed Assumption outfit. In essence, they had a very good day but Ivanhoe had an off day.
Assumption certainly started well and they led by five goals at quarter time. And whilst the boys battled gamely to stick with them over the course of the next two quarters, they completely took over in the last stanza of the game to give them an easy victory. On the brighter side was the continuing good form of Bailey Jordan who once again stood up, taking some good marks and keeping the team competitive.

Girls’ Basketball
The girls had a tough challenge against a talented Caulfield team. Sarah Foley and Romy Costa battled hard in defence against their star shooter, and Zoe played some aggressive basketball to constantly get to the basket and free throw line.
However, in the end, Caulfield were just too big and strong and the team had to be content with a respectable 21 point loss.
