Professional Development Session with Stephen Heppell
The informative seminar on ICT in learning was held in the new Professional Development Centre on Lower Heidelberg Road, Ivanhoe. The School was very pleased to have this world expert in ICT to launch the first seminar at this new facility which is a dedicated seminar space, fully equipped with the latest technology.
Stephen is a leading voice on the role of ICT in learning and is Professor of New Media Environments at the Centre for Excellence in Media Practice. He leads pedagogic research at the Centre and supervises PhD students. Previously, Stephen spent around a quarter of a century building Ultralab, which established an exceptional reputation as a world leading learning technology research centre. He later went on to head his own policy, research and practice consultancy which advises governments and national agencies throughout the world on the strategic development of ICT.
A few points of interest from his presentation were that toilets can really affect learning for students and he sahred some statistics about the number of students that don't use school toilets. Stephen also shared his experience on turning entire schools into learning spaces and the importance of getting the right light in classrooms. He belives that an ideal classroom should have light in the 400-500 range of the luxmeter.
Ivanhoe Professional Learning is a division of Ivanhoe Grammar School that provides quality professional development training for teachers. Established in 2007, the program is open to all teachers interested in learning practical skills and techniques to enhance their classroom practice.
