Students Develop an Innovative Solution
The Year 9 Out of Class program MasterTech is a unique opportunity for students to apply their creativity and problem-solving skills to real-world issues. In the latest edition of the program, four students teamed up to develop an innovative solution for people with vision impairment. Year 9 students Robbie, Alex, Michael and Scott created 4Sight, an app that uses artificial intelligence to make the world more accessible for those with vision impairment. Their project was inspired by their grandparents’ experiences of losing their independence and autonomy as their vision deteriorated.
Available on iOS or as a web application, 4Sight uses your device’s user’s camera and positioning to access the world around it. The app’s AI Assistant, Jenny, named in honour of Latrobe Distinguished Professor Jenny Graves, a renowned geneticist and the namesake of the building where MasterTech is held, allows users to ask any question about their environment. Jenny processes the data collected via the camera and provides an auditory response for the user in real-time.
The 4Sight application has already had over a thousand downloads, with the group continuing to develop their project outside of school hours. Such is the quality of their work, that the group was guest presenter for the Cisco Victorian Team, with all present astounded at the depth of their knowledge, feature set and commitment to the project. The next steps for the project are to connect with NGOs to further develop the project.
