WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
In the late 1930’s England was reeling from the abdication of Edward the Eighth. The royal family and the nobility were in damage control to justify their very existence as an entitled few, and they were forced to embrace a better understanding of the masses – more out of necessity than will.
Me and My Girl strives to seize upon the foibles of the class system in a flipped version of the Cinderella story in a pre-war landscape. The unrelenting stream of one-liners that define cockney humour, also underpin this script and score; irreverently poking the bear of the hoi polloi, wrapped up in catchy melodies and a terrific libretto.
On the back of a long and successful tradition of school musicals, humour has proved to be the sticking power for generations of curious and motivated young theatre makers. For this show, the atmosphere in the rehearsal room has been, at times, raucous with laughter at the invention of the staging and the interpretation of well-defined characters.
