Girls’ Firsts Basketball Back To Back Premiers
The Winter Season of AGSV/APS Sport was an outstanding success culminating in two premierships for Ivanhoe Grammar School. The Girls’ First Basketball team completed their undefeated season beating Caulfield Grammar School by 14 points. Led brilliantly by captain Liv Perillo, the team created history on the court named in the late Nigel Kendall’s honour. It was wonderful to see the Ivy Army out in force, supporting and cheering the girls on, making it a truly memorable day. This team has now won back-to-back premierships and won the 2023 Premiership outright. This is an incredible achievement and a testament to the strength and skills of all the players, the school is very proud of their success.
Captain’s Report
Going into the new season, the squad was looking very strong! Everyone was a returning player from the previous successful year. The first three games of the season were on the road, but we didn’t let that hold us back. With the good foundations we had built, we were continuously winning by 40 points for the first half of the competition. The first real challenge of the season was round 6, against Wesley, we quickly soon realised that the tougher games made us stronger as a team. Pulling it together we won by 9 points, but a few weeks later we found ourselves in the same predicament against Caulfield who we shared the premiership last season. During training that week we were all quite nervous because we knew that this game could determine how the season ends. It was a close score the whole game, but we ended up winning by 10 points with one more game against Haileybury before the Ultimate Round. Heading into the Grand Final we were undefeated, but we still knew Caulfield was going to be a tough challenge. Caulfield came out strong leading by 4 into halftime. However, at the beginning of the second half the Ivy Army arrived in full force and we were able to reach the next level. From there on there was no sight of losing; Georgia McBean, a standout player, didn’t let anyone down this game, scoring 28 points. Similarly, Izzy Wightman was so strong defensively and great on the rebounds. Overall it was a great team game and I am very proud of the season we had.
