IDAHOBIT 2022
Every year on Tuesday 17 May we celebrate IDAHOBIT, an International Day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination, a cause proudly acknowledged at Ivanhoe Grammar School. International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia & Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) celebrates LGBTQIA+ people globally and raises awareness for the work still needed to combat discrimination.
The rainbow flag flew proudly at the front of The Ridgeway Campus and special events were held on the day across the school.
In the lead up to Tuesday, Year 9 students from Ivanhoe Grammar School’s University Campus, through the Wellbeing program, increased their awareness of the discrimination faced by the LGBTQIA+ community, explored how this community identifies and pledged how they could show respect and support.
This culminated in casual clothes day displaying all the colours of the rainbow and the gold coin donations going to Minus 18, an organisation leading change, building social inclusion, and advocating for the LGBTQIA+ youth of Australia.
Jess Roberts, Head of Wellbeing at University Campus said, ‘with something like 20 per cent of Australian secondary school students identifying as LGBTQIA+ it is paramount that these days are acknowledged, and awareness is raised so that all Ivanhoe Grammar School students can have a sense of belonging and feel safe at school.’
