Sports Report

It was an exciting week in sport, with all three boys’ winter teams going through to the Grand Final. In the girls, our Netball team finished on a high with a very good win over Carey. Some highlights are below:

Boys’ Grand Finals

While both our boys’ hockey and soccer teams played exciting draws in their Grand Finals last Friday, only a win would be enough to take home the Premiership. Under the rules of the AGSV competition, the team that finishes higher on the ladder must be beaten in the Grand Final and unfortunately for us, PEGS finished the Home and Away season higher than us in both.

In football, Marcellin simply proved too good on the day and once again denied us a football premiership.

Although we didn’t bring home any silverware, the school is very proud to have been in the running for all three Premierships in one season; a previously unheard-of achievement. Coupled with the way the boys played and conducted themselves in such hard-fought matches. And we once again congratulate Roger Gill (Football Coach), David Plumb (Soccer TIC) and Ed Smithers (Hockey TIC) for guiding these young lads throughout the season.

Football

In front of arguably the largest crowd seen at a school football match, our boys went down to Marcellin by 26 points in a very tight struggle. Despite an early surge from Marcellin, at the 10-minute mark of the last quarter, we got to within 8 points, which was a great effort considering the boys were kicking into the breeze. In the end, however, Marcellin steadied came out on top.

Soccer

Knowing we had to win to bring home the Premiership, the boys were faced with an even greater challenge as PEGS scored in the very first minute of the game! And whilst we were able to equalise, the PEGS defence held strong and we just couldn’t get that winning goal away!

Hockey

The boys fought valiantly to record a 2 all draw with favourites PEGS but unfortunately, much like the soccer, we needed a win to take the Premiership. Given more than half our team were younger boys, augers well for another shot at the Premiership next year.

In girls’ sport, our netball girls finished the season in sixth place but went out on a high with a good win over Carey 58 to 37. However, our soccer and basketball teams went down to PEGS and Carey respectively.
