The Ridgeway Campus Centenary Concert

Ivanhoe Grammar School has a long and rich tradition of music making and music performance. Over the years there have been many luminaries who have made their mark in Music: as conductors, performers and educators, both as instrumentalists and vocalists.
The Ridgeway Campus celebrated 100 years of Music at the School with a special Centenary concert and the program included music from the Symphony Orchestra, String Ensemble, Wind Band, Choir, Chamber Ensembles and Soloists, both vocal and instrumental.
Buckley Hall provided the perfect location for the excellent array of musical talent that was on display. The evening commenced with a solo flute performance by Year 12 student Alison who played the emotive piece, Syrinx. The Abbado String Orchestra followed with a symphonic poem composed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov which is described as ‘a score replete with beguiling orchestral colours, fresh and piquant melodies, with a mild oriental flavour’.
Other highlights of the evening included a piano solo by Year 12 student Meiting, the Combined Ridgeway Chorale and Locksley Chorale, the Locksley String Orchestra’s rendition of Song of Ice and Fire – the theme from the HBO series Game of Thrones as well as the vocal soloist by Year 12 Captain of Music, Simren who performed Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.
The evening culminated with the Golden Symphony Orchestra performing three pieces; Summer Dances, Overture to the ballet Romeo and Juliet by Tchaikovsky and finally a medley from the musical Les Miserables.
The evening was a wonderful mix of classical and modern music and was the culmination of many weeks’ practice and rehearsal by the students from Years 7 to 12. Congratulations to all the performers and everybody who worked tirelessly behind the scenes. Here’s to the next Centenary of Music at Ivanhoe!
