Inspiring words for Reconciliation Week

9 June 2017

Last week, as part of Reconciliation Week, The Ridgeway Campus students had the great privilege of hearing from Eva Jo Edwards - a Mutthi Mutthi/Yorta Yorta elder - at their Senior Years Assembly. Student Amalia, a Year 12 Prefect with the Indigenous Recognition portfolio, shared with us her reflections.

“Eva-Jo’s visit to Ivanhoe for Reconciliation Week prompted both staff and students to consider what reconciliation means to us. Through sharing her deeply moving story, Eva-Jo presented an important opportunity to reflect on the history of our nation’s first people, and the traditional owners of the land that the school is on today.

Eva-Jo’s speech had a profound impact on me and all who listened due to her real-life experiences as a member of the stolen generation and the way she told us how this has affected her life and the lives of other members of the stolen generation today.

Meeting Eva-Jo and chatting to her afterwards was a fantastic experience for me as the prefect in charge of indigenous recognition at Ivanhoe, as she was able to suggest areas and ways our school can move forward with reconciliation and build on the work we have already done. “ Amalia
