Female athletes have a great summer season

Two athletes, Year 9 student Olivia and Year 12 student, Alice have performed extremly well over the summer season and have bright sporting futures ahead of them.

Year 9 student and all-round athlete, Olivia has just capped off a successful season by winning the U16 Women’s Pole Vault at the Australia Junior Track and Field Championships in Sydney. She achieved a personal best of 3.30m to win. This is very impressive as she only added Pole Vaulting to her repertoire two years ago. She also made it into the final of the 200m hurdles, came sixth in the final and achieved a personal best.

As the season winds down, Olivia will now have a full winter of training ahead of her. Olivia’s sporting idol is hurdler Sally Pearson and she hopes to one day represent Australia at the Olympics just like Sally Pearson did in 2012.

Another highlight has been Year 12 student, Alice’s rapid rise in the game of netball. This Goal Attack and Goal Shooter recently took out the Northcote/Preston Leader Junior Sports Star Award. Last April she performed very well at the National Netball Championships in Darwin. She captained the undefeated Victorian U17 team and was named most valuable player after throwing 95 goals from 111 attempts which gave her a shooting average of 88 per cent for the titles.

Recently a sporting dream of Alice’s came true when she got the opportunity to play for the Melbourne Vixens. Hand surgery for the Vixens shooter, Erin Hoare prompted Alice’s promotion to the team and she had to return home early from the 21/U Netball Titles being played in Adelaide to make her debut for the team.

Alice admires netballer, Sharelle McMahon who captained the Australian Diamonds and who is one of the best Goal Attacks in the world and aspires to play as well as her one day. It looks like she is well on her way.

The sport program at Ivanhoe Grammar School encourages students to actively particpate and have fun over a comprehensive ranges of summer and winter sports. To read all about Sport at Ivanhoe click here
