DOC Football Victorian Schools Community Cup
In the largest Competition of its kind to be held in Victoria, the DOC Football Victorian Schools Community Cup will bring over 140 schools from far and wide to find Victoria's number one Primary School Soccer Team. The tournament utilises the game of soccer to help players reach their full potential both on and off the field.
Over nine weekends, tournaments will be held across the state, and each tournament will pit sixteen schools against each other over two days to play for their respective regional cup. Primary school students from grades four to six are eligible to play and the winner and runner-up in each area will proceed to the state finals to play for the inaugural DOC Community Cup.
In conjunction with Darren Gibson, the Community Cup was organised with David O’Connor from DOC Academy. David played professionally in England for Barnsley F.C. and has extensive coaching experience in Australia as well as Singapore in the S-League. Through David’s work with the DOC Academy he has helped many young players to develop their skills.
On Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 October, with glorious weather all weekend, Ivanhoe Grammar School hosted the Melbourne regional heat. The School was delighted to welcome Rob Mitchell MP to officially open the tournament and in his opening speech discussed the importance of fair play, leading a healthy active lifestyle and most importantly to have fun.
At the DOC Community Cup, David introduced Trey O’Sullivan. Trey began his soccer journey with DOC Academy after initially playing Australian Rules Football. He has recently been signed to a 2 year contract with A-League club Melbourne City in their junior squad. He was a terrific speaker for the young boys and girls and generously answered all of their questions. He even finished off with a display of juggling skills which all of our visitors were amazed by.
The event was won in the end by Holy Trinity in Eltham North. The runner up was Plenty Parklands from Mill Park and third place was Resurrection House from Essendon.
The weekend tournament was a huge success and a true testament to the organisation and hard work of Darren Gibson.
