Buckley House Athletes win medals at the State Athletics Titles

In what was a remarkable day at the State Athletics Championships on Monday 27 October, two athletes from Buckley House competed in three separate events and earned three medals!

John McInerney, Primary Physical Education Teacher/Sports Co-ordinator, says “These State titles are always of a very high standard and only the best athletes prevail. Each year we try very hard at Buckley House just to get some athletes to qualify into this event, but to win multiple medals is an outstanding and remarkable achievement”.

Mia and Owen were the competing athletes, both running in the Under 11 long distance events. The State Athletics Track at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park was under immense pressure due to the inclement weather which delayed the start of several events.

Mia ran the 800m in the morning and then joined Owen to run the 1500m in the afternoon. In what was a fantastic beginning to the day, Mia ran a superb race, coming from behind and running a thirteen second personal best to take out the Gold Medal in the 800m.

Both competitors were raring and ready to go in the afternoon and again ran great races. Mia came from well behind again in the 1500m to do a long fast surge to pass all competitors heading into the straight only to get run down in the last 50m. Mia's Silver Medal was a great result and partnered well with her 800m Gold.

Owen also ran a great race, it wasn’t quite his personal best as far as times go but he did run a tactically brilliant race, taking his time to slowly burn off all competitors and being left to the last three in the last lap. The two other (physically larger and stronger) boys out-sprinted Owen down the straight but he still achieved what he has been longing for – a State Medal.

The exciting news for Mia is that her Gold and Silver performances will most likely enable her to make the Victorian team and represent the State at the National Titles in Tasmania next month. What an exciting culmination to her sporting career at Buckley House as she heads into Year 7 next year. For Owen, being a Year 5 Student, he will be back again next season to represent Buckley House in future Athletics Championships.

Congratulations to the competitors!
