New Middle Years Curriculum
04 Jan 2010
An exciting development in Middle Years curriculum is underway. Ivanhoe has been accepted by the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) as a Candidate School for the IBO Middle Years Program (MYP). The aim of the program is to develop a curriculum that encourages international awareness in young people with an emphasis on the skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to participate in an increasingly global society.
There is an holistic approach to learning within the MYP, requiring all teachers to consider the student’s development as a whole person through every aspect of engagement with the curriculum. There are eight individual subject disciplines, each of equal importance. They include Language A (English), Language B (a second language), Mathematics, Sciences, Physical Education, The Arts, Humanities and Technology. Each is structured in such a way that academic rigour applies to the continuous development of knowledge and skills as students progress through the year levels.
Students learn to make connections between what is learned in different subjects, and also between what is learned in school and real life. Our first MYP curriculum units will be taught to Years 6 and 7 on each campus in Term 2, 2010.
